Greetings! My husband has been in the Coast Guard for 20 years. He was called active duty 3 years ago, and because of some situations he faced, I am truly thankful to live in America, and truly thankful for those who have served and given their lives for what we have. We are in the midst of the season to show our patriotism..our love of God, fellow man, and country...and felt it would be a wonderful theme for the first of our new "pattern packs".

Pattern packs are groupings of multiple projects designed for decorating and celebrating holidays, seasons and other themed occasions. My daughter and I are hoping to put new packs together every two months or so. These packs will contain all the patterns, instructions, and techniques just like you find in our books, only they are printed from our home in pattern form rather than made into a book...thus we are able to keep the cost much lower. They are available in hard copy or as an ebook, which is sent to your email account in downloadable pdf format. We hope these packs will give you ideas and that you will enjoy sewing for the special occasions.

..4" square of Heat 'n Bond Lite

..Fuse Heat 'n Bond Lite to the back of the star fabric.
..Draw a 3 inch star onto the paper side (A).

..Cut out the star and remove the paper backing.

..Place and press the star in the center of one fabric piece (B).

..Layer together, the batting, the back fabric, right side up, then the top star fabric piece, right side down.

..Pin, then stitch at 1/4" all around, leaving a 2" opening on one edge, to turn right side out (C).

..Clip across the corners to remove bulk.

..Turn right side out and carefully poke corners into position.

..By hand, stitch the opening closed (D).

..Topstitch, presser foot width from the edge, all around the outside edges.

..Stitch around the star applique with a straight stitch, a zig-zag stitch, or a machine applique stitch (E).

..You're done!

Technique: Using a Walking Foot

- Easily stitch through layers without fabric shifting -

My favorite machine foot by far is a walking foot. It enables you to do so much more with your machine, successfully! A walking foot has teeth attached to the presser foot to grip and feed the top piece of fabric. Every machine has lower teeth, called the feed dog. Having teeth on both the top and bottom lets the fabric feed through evenly, and controls shifting and sliding. It is wonderful when you sew quilts or fabrics with thickness, as well as for sheers or any 'slick' type fabrics because it helps to keep the fabric from creeping. You can purchase an add-on walking foot for most any machine, you just need to know if your machine has a high shank or low shank to purchase the correct foot the first time around! Price is usually in the $20.00 range....and well worth it! Purchase from your local sewing machine dealer.
