Piecing Borders:  Guidelines for Banners for Churches
It is important to remember when using church banners to make your sanctuary or foyer attractive and appealing, that the borders on the banners are just as important as the main section. The borders are a defining point and can either add or detract from the overall affect.
  • Cutting: Accuracy is vital! Follow the grain lines with precision. The only exception being plaid or checks, then follow the printed lines.
  • Pressing: Always press a seam before joining it to another seam. Once the seam is pressed flat, then stitch and press again to set the stitches and eliminate puckers.
  • 1/4" Seam Allowance: The easiest way to ensure a 1/4" allowance is to mark it on your machine and follow it as you sew. Blue painters tape or a rubber band around the arm of the sewing machine will work.
  • Stitching: When piecing borders, no backstitching is required. Backstitches leave a bump that is difficult to stitch over when working with borders. Reduce the stitch length to 2.0 and pin only the seams that meet. Too many pins will pucker the fabric when you stitch.
  • Squaring: Correctly cutting your pieces and then accurately sewing your seam will make your final product the correct size. A Quilters' Square will help you trim your block perfectly.
Keep in mind that a Christian church banner is meant to lift hearts and minds to Christ during worship, and an aesthetically pleasing, well made banner will do just that.
